Staphylococcus Aureus Pathogenesis - Surface Proteins
Targets of these proteins are host laminin and fibronectin, protein
components of extracellular matrix. Fibronectin is present on endothelial and epithelial
surfaces and takes part in blood clots structure promoting adhesion. Clumping factor is a
fibrinogen/fibrin binding protein that promotes attachment to blood clots. An adhesin with high
affinity for collagen takes an important role in developing osteomyelitis and damaged tissue
infections (as a result of adherence assays on mutants strains).
